"Splash"ing in the Pool!

« Reply #15 on: February 12, 2010, 01:35:48 PM »

Picked up the little guy today. His name is "Opie".  Grin When I told the vet, she doubled over, then said "Oh my God, he LOOKS like a little Ron Howard!"

Vision is compromised in his left eye - barely any, if that. He sure did like his cookies though, and was as happy and waggily as can be.

Vet says he's definitely a mix, and just adored him. He weighs 26lbs.

We're having a Girl's Night Out tonight, so she'll give me his medical workup over wings and beer.  Grin

"Splash"ing in the Pool!

« Reply #17 on: February 12, 2010, 06:03:53 PM »

Just got off the phone with the vet. Opie's medical eval is the following:

- Micro Opthalmia (small eye) - he is completely blind in his left eye; it never developed properly; the eye itself is healthy, just non-functioning

- heart murmur; if congenital, that may explain his small size, the eye development issue, hips, etc

- skin is a trainwreck; no mites, may be yeast/bacteria; he has had a medicated bath; given Revolution for HW as this will also kill any mites that may be present

- miraculously he is HEARTWORM NEGATIVE!!!

- she estimates that he is apprx 1 yr old

- personality-wise, she said he "acts all Golden" and "if she had a yard, she would keep him" :-)

Since his size, eye and heart are compromised, she want to do bloodwork to see if all his organs are functioning properly, or if they may have "defects" also. When he is asleep for neutering, she wants to xray his hips to see what is going on and severity of HD.

Long list of stuff, but hopefully all is treatable and he lives a long, healthy life. He certainly deserves it, and we will do the best we can to make sure of it.  drunk

He will be a hard one to place, for sure.  Not hard to find a home, but hard to let him go.  ::sigh::
